The dwarf Vechur cow is native to Kerala, India, and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years as a powerful source of healing. The smallest cattle breed in the world, Vechur are completely free to graze the mineral-rich lands around them and are able to synthesize the local grasses and herbs—producing ghee that is well known for its highly medicinal content.
Indians hold the Vechur cow in high reverence as they are the solution to many health ailments, and we are honored to be able to share this ancient medicinal practice with the world. Only about 300 Vechur cows remain today, and conservation efforts are key to their survival. Having witnessed the rapid deterioration of such traditions as the small Vechur cows in Kerala, we are now committed to preserving the Ayurvedic tradition. Our first project supports the cottage manufacturing of Ayurvedic Ghee using traditional methods, and most importantly, little Vechur cows. We get the best possible ghee and the people and cows living in this traditional way are protected. Everyone wins.
Ayurvedic ghee is highly nutritious. It is known to improve digestion, boost the immune system, even out hormones, balance cholesterol, lubricate the intestinal tract and all tissues inside the body and to maintain overall well being. It is packed with omega-3 and omega-9 essential fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and is one of the highest natural food sources of butyric acid and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) – an antioxidant with anti-viral properties that can protect against arterial plaque, cancer and diabetes.
Take one rounded teaspoon daily for best results. Ghee's rich nutty flavor is delicious in warm beverages like bone broth, coffee and tea, or used for cooking, baking and sautéing. It has a high smoke point (250°C or 482°F) and won’t break down into free radicals like many other oils, making it one of the best fats to use for cooking.
